Preacher: Pastor Stephen Series: James: A Faith That Works Topic: Calling, Community, Compassion, Favoritism, Gospel Scripture: James 2:1–7

Faith Shows No Partiality

James 2:1-7

1.       Favoritism is Opposed to What We Believe (vs. 1-4)

  • When favoritism reigns, we judge others with evil intentions
  • Battle favoritism by treating another with love and humility

2.       Favoritism is Opposed to Who We are (vs. 5-7)

  • When favoritism reigns, we forget our identity in Christ
  • Battle favoritism by remembering “whose” you are and “who” you are in Christ!

Discussion Questions to Go Deeper:

  • What are the main differences between the two visitors in this passage?
  • How does James say that the people in the church responded to each man?  How would you respond to these people if they walked into our youth group?
  • What are some ways that a person could show an attitude of favoritism and judge with the wrong motives?
  • What does it mean to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom?  Who has God promised this honor to?
  • Read Luke 4:16–21 and 14:12–14. What do these Scriptures teach about Jesus’s attitude towards the poor?
  • Read 1 Corinthians 1:26–31. What does Paul teach in this passage about who God calls and uses?
  • Read 2 Corinthians 8:7-9. What did Christ do in order to give us the riches of salvation?
